Information About Access

Howick Hall Gardens

This project has been funded and facilitated by England’s first Destination Development Partnership – Destination North East England. A partnership between , Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, Visit Northumberland and Visit County Durham, benefiting all seven local authorities. Destination North East England is funded by UK Government.

Information for People with Physical Disabilities

Most of the paths in the garden are accessible to people with physical disabilities, but they are constructed of small gravel or grass.  Please ask for a Physical Disability Map.

Regular visitors who use a wheelchair tell us that most paths are suitable for them, but please be aware of the camber on those marked in orange and, because of the gradient, avoid those marked in red. Those marked in pink are alternative paths for wheelchairs or people with physical disabilities.

Carers who are assisting disabled visitors gain free access to the Gardens and Arboretum.

Check out the list of facilities and equipment that are accessible below:

  • Power Assisted Wheelchair Loan – One power assisted (Power Stroller) wheelchair and one standard push wheelchair are available on request at the Admissions Kiosk. The power assisted wheelchair is recommended for the terrain in the garden and has an optional small motor power attachment which can be operated by the person pushing the wheelchair. To ensure availability, please telephone to book on 01665 577 191 between 10.30am and 5pm.
  • Tramper Scooter Rental – The Tramper Scooter is a versatile mobility scooter made for adventuring in the great outdoors. It’s perfect for navigating unpaved paths and open fields. To reserve the scooter at Howick Hall Gardens & Arboretum, you need to be a member of ‘Outdoor Mobility.’ For further details about their memberships, the trails and booking process, please visit their website. Tramper Hire | Outdoor Mobility | Northern England
  • Toilets – Accessible and suitable for disabled visitors.
  • Tearoom – Accessible via flat surface (no steps) and wide door.
  • Parking – A limited number of car parking spaces for disabled people are available within the garden, please make further enquiries with the Admissions Clerk. Drivers may also drop off disabled visitors at the tea room entrance and return the car back to the main car park.
  • The Gardens – Garden seats are placed around the garden to help those who cannot walk long distances and are marked on the map with a blue cross.

Please note – Elderly and vulnerable people and also people with mobility problems should be aware of the walking distance to the front garden (about 1/4 mile) to ensure they can return safely.  It should also be noted that the admission kiosk closes at 5pm (4pm in late season).  However, although the mobile phone signal strength is poor at Howick, for calls to 999 and 112 the signal is boosted and emergency services can be accessed directly.

Safety information

If you notice any hazard during your visit, or if there is an accident, please inform someone at the kiosk in the car park.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Howick Hall Gardens & Arboretum.

What our visitors say…

We visited on Friday 10th July and contacted you beforehand regarding use of your motorised wheelchair.

I wanted to say thank you for having such a great resource available and at no additional cost.

My daughter (18) suffers from chronic pain and struggles to walk any distance. It allowed her to be part of the whole day with us.

Thank you again.

CT – July 2026.

I am visiting a dear friend in Alnmouth, and today she brought me to Howick Hall, one of her favourite places.

I am disabled (Multiple Sclerosis), and I have never been anywhere that has given access needs such consideration. Your information leaflet (a map with benches marked!!), the paths, the sensory garden, the location of the disabled toilet just at the door.

I have never been in a public space (I live in Edinburgh) and seen so many people with physical disabilities enjoying a day out. What a credit to you!

Thank you for showing the world how simple it is to create access- by simply keeping the diverse needs of us humans in mind while planning. Top marks to you – and sincere thanks from me!

JT – July 2025.
